How Often Should I Have My Carpets Professionally Cleaned?

Your carpet should be cleaned often, not just for aesthetics, but to maintain good indoor air quality and prolong the life of your carpet. Your carpet is the biggest air filter in your home. It traps dirt, dust, dust mites, pet dander and allergens. When the carpet is walked on, the allergens are released into the air. Regular professional carpet cleaning removes these contaminants, improving indoor air quality. This is important particularly for occupants with allergies, asthma or other respiratory ailments.

The Institute of Inspection cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) says:
“Most carpet manufacturers recommend that carpets are professionally cleaned by an IICRC
Certified Technician every 12- 18 months using a hot water extraction method to maintain the
warranty.  As a rule, carpets should be cleaned on a regular basis. In fact, tests have shown that
if you wait until
the carpet needs cleaning, you took six months off of the life of the carpet.
In other words, be sure to
seek professional cleaning before your carpet appears heavily soiled.
The 12-18 month manufacturer recommendation does not take into account, the region, climate or environmental factors that affect how quickly carpets get soiled. Other factors like children and pets will also affect the rate of soiling. In Colorado Springs, where we get snow about 4 months out of the year, we recommend having carpets cleaned professionally every six months. During the summer dirt gets tracked in as kids and pets come in and out. In the winter snow, ice-melt and magnesium chloride from the roads also get tracked onto your carpets and area rugs. A professional cleaning will remove these carpet damaging substances.

As the quote from the IICRC states, the preferred cleaning method is hot water extraction. That is also the method performed here at Hydro Clean Carpet Cleaning.
